Basilika Sonntagberg

The Sonntagberg is one of Austria’s most recognisable landmarks and has been one of Central Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations for centuries. Due to its exposed location, the Basilica of Sonntagberg is heavily exposed to wind and weather. This valuable cultural treasure therefore required extensive renovation. The process and the wonderful result were photographed
by award-winning photographer Lois Lammerhuber and documented in this book.

Details

The Baroque Basilica on Sonntagberg is one of Austria’s most recognisable landmarks. The first chapel was built here as early as 1440. The present-day minor basilica was designed by Baroque architects Jakob Prandtauer and Josef Mungenast. For centuries, Sonntagberg has been one of Central Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations and one of Austria’s spiritual centres. Due to its exposed location, the structure of the Sonntagberg Basilica is heavily exposed to wind and weather. Over the decades, this has led to structural damage that requires urgent renovation of this valuable cultural treasure.

To mark the double anniversary of 400 years of the miraculous image and 50 years of the minor basilica in 2014, extensive measures to revitalise the Sonntagberg were launched, which will be completed in 2026. The individual steps of the renovation and the colourful, baroque result are documented in this anniversary book.
